Map of FloridaThe purple small area of the map located to the very right and straight down is Florida.
How florida was aquired Louisiana was acquired through a negotiation by President Thomas Jefferson. But in 1804 Thomas Jefferson sent two diplomats to Spain to buy Florida, Spain’s answer was no. Over the next few years, Spain’s control of Florida weakened. The Spanish government could do nothing to stop the raids on farms in Georgia by Seminoles and ex-slaves. Despite his orders, Andrew Jackson marched into Florida with a force of 1,700 troops. Over the next few weeks, he captured Spanish military posts. He managed to replace the Spanish governor with an American. With Andrew Jackson’s actions being illegal Spain wanted Andrew Jackson to be sent back to Washington. President Monroe had a choice to either remove Andrew Jackson or apologize or send a message saying govern Florida properly or get out. James Monroe sent the message. Spain was fearful of war so they decided to leave. In 1819 the Spanish government gave Florida to the United States, and in exchange the United States paid 5 million dollars to pay the settlers.
