MAP OF LOUISIANA TERRITORYLouisiana purchase is the green land in the middle of the map.
HOW WE ACQUIRED THE LANDNapoleon had plans for Louisiana. He hoped to settle the territory with thousands of French farmers. The farmers were alarmed by this. President Thomas Jefferson sent James Monroe to try to buy France for 7.5 million dollars. When James Monroe reached France Napoleon changed his plans on Louisiana and decided to offer to sell it to James Monroe. Of course James Monroe was ready and prepared to say yes. Napoleon did not like the idea of losing Louisiana to the British from the war if it occurred; it made more sense to sell it to the United States. James Monroe signed a treaty on April 30, 1803 to give Louisiana to the United States in exchange for 15 million dollars.
