How the Oregon country was aquiredThe United States’ claim to Oregon was based on the Lewis and Clark expedition. The first American settlers to travel through South Pass to Oregon were missionaries. These three missionaries were happy to find the Oregon country and it was soon to be looked at as a pioneer’s paradise. The weather was always nice there weren’t any obvious diseases, and there was good available land for farmers. When this great news was spread lots of settlers were ready to join. In 1843 about 1,000 pioneers headed for the Oregon country. With time the population expanded as reporter called it Oregon fever. Stephen Polk was assuring that it may be unsafe and that a war could break out in Oregon between Britain. Instead, he agreed to a compromise treaty that divided Oregon roughly in half at the 49th parallel. With this Oregon was nicely and partly handed over to Britain and to the United States.
